Model/Year: 2016

Pros: Given its size and the fact it's not carbon, this really isn't too heavy - feels very planted on the trails and the wide bars give great feeling of control, even for a novice

Cons: It's a lot more capable than I am! Also I now have to wait for the Fox Factory Transfer seatpost to be released, so it matches the fork and shock. Finally the seatpost clamp bolt snapped pretty quickly

Recommendation: Coming from road biking (yeah, I know) I didn't know much about what to choose for the rough stuff, so was guided by my local cycle shop. This is a bike that inspires confidence and I have yet to push it to its limits. I fitted some CrankBros Mallet DH Race pedals which pair very nicely

Model/Year: 2014

Pros: I love so many things about this bike. The geometry and suspension setup is absolutely perfectly to ride the gnarliest XC terrain. Using all carbon except the aluminum seat stays is really smart from a long term durability standpoint and you couldn't ask for a better spec sheet, all Shimano groupset including the wonderful SLX brakes. The 32mm fox suspension is light weight and performs great, the 2 by drivetrain is needed for meaningful XC riding.

Cons: The Shimano XT rear hub is terrible as it uses old school cup and cone bearings instead of modern sealed bearings and has already broken on me. They are welded though so tubeless is incredibly easy to set up. Let's just hope the new rear hub holds up!

Recommendation: For anything short of leaving the ground for extended periods of time I don't know how you could ask for a better bike. I just completed a 67 mile epic ride at big bend state park and it held together perfectly. So glad Jenson USA had this on sale for 2999 instead of 5 grand! At that price point to get full carbon and a durable build kit is a no brainier. Also oddly the Medium size fits my 6'3'' frame perfectly so just know Orbea sizes their top tubes one size up from most manufacturers.

Model/Year: 2014

Pros: It trounces everything I demo'd regardless of budget.

Cons: Basque isn't the same as Catalan.

Recommendation: It was shocking to realize the difference between this bike and all of the other bikes I have had as I have snapped 3 Santa Cruz LT 2.2s and awaiting yet another replacement. They sent me a carbon nomad 27.5!!??? I already have a Carbon Orbea 29 er hardtail and it was a no brainer for me to opt for the awesome OCCAM
