Singletracks Trax Information
Motivation
Singletracks.com was created to share trail directions and descriptions with users
around the block and around the world. Trail descriptions are often limited, despite the
best efforts of the posters, and many of us have come to rely upon guidebooks with maps and
turn-by-turn descriptions. But guidebooks have limitations as well, most notably their lack
of portability. Plus, you have to at least know how to read a map and often that isn't enough
to keep you from getting lost.
Enter the GPS
With GPS technology, adventurers can find out where there are, how long they've been there,
and how long it should take them to reach their destination. The GPS can tell them how high
they are, how much they've climbed, and how far they've come. But most GPS maps you find
don't have the trails that you want to ride.
The Solution
Many riders are now using GPS units in place of low-tech cycling computers to keep track
of the information outlined above. You can find GPS units starting at around $90 and bike
mounts for less than $15, a huge drop from a few years ago. With a GPS unit and a Trax file from Singletracks.com,
you can now have the GPS tell you where to turn and how far you have to go! You can even preview the
climbs and view a map of the area before you head out.
The Process
To get started, you'll need to purchase a membership to the Singletracks Trax service. Once you're a member,
you'll be able to browse tracks all over the country (click here to see which Trax are currently available). As a member you can
preview the elevation profiles, maps, and other data on the trail to decide if you want to ride the trail. Click the download
link and the data will be saved to your computer. Finally, use your GPS computer software to transfer the track to your GPS
unit and hit the trail!
Disclaimer
In order to maintain high quality data, Singletracks.com screens all GPS data carefully. We
have not personally ridden all of the Trax available for download but we have made an effort to
ensure data integrity. Registered users can submit feedback on track data and low quality data will be
removed from time to time. However, no warranty is expressed or implied by Singletracks.com and as
always, ride at your own risk! Mountain biking is dangerous and no technology will keep you from getting lost,
hurt, frustrated, etc. Be safe!
