We see a ton of GPS data submitted every day here on singletracks but we've noticed that people could use some help cleaning up their data after the ride. We offer some tools here on singletracks but decided to start fresh with a free online app to help you manage, organize, and store your GPS ride data.

Meet GPSApp.net. The site is in early "beta" mode right now but if you're a GPS geek feel free to drop by and give it a whirl. You can import GPS data from virtually any Garmin device directly through the site and can also upload GPX or TCX formatted data files. Color code tracks, choose custom waypoint icons, and download your data in a variety of formats.

Once we fine tune the basics we'll be adding more features like sharing, exporting, etc. I've been using the site myself during development and I'm addicted!

Awesome! One can never have too many online GPS apps, as well as local apps!

OK so I'm checking it out and it's great! Is it too late for input or feature requests?

Here's a track I uploaded:

Unlike some of the GPS web tools that already exist, the goal of GPSApp is to help people create USEFUL maps for navigation. For those who are looking for a place to brag about their rides or keep track of training data, GPSApp won't be the best place to do that.

So yeah, lay your feature requests on me. We have plans to add specific features down the line but in the current beta phase we're just focusing on making sure the basics work. Rest assured we have a to-do list full of additional tools to clean, export, and share GPS data that will be coming soon!

Agreed, on the exclusions, as there are plenty of good sites for that.

I noticed two things on GPSApp that are slightly annoying.

1) is it possible to have the track and/or file default to the terrain map view? Since these are going to be mostly mountain bike tracks, it seems a little silly to have the default view be street map.

2) Can there be an option to name the track when it is imported? Unless I'm missing something, all the tracks import as 'unknown' and then you have to go edit them to give them a name. It seems like a weird extra step that other GPS sites don't have.

So far it's a great app. I was even able to switch out a GPS track within a file without having to re-create the shared file (and its associated link) That's a great feature!

Good idea and easy fix, though I don't necessarily expect most of the tracks on GPSApp to be MTB related. Way more people use GPS for hiking and other stuff but the focus will definitely be on mostly outdoor rec. uses.

So the upload is actually set up to import big files that may have multiple tracks and the initial "name" of each track is taken from the GPX file or device itself. If you didn't name your track, it will be imported as "unknown".

Would it help if there were a step immediately after the tracks are imported that allows you to name many tracks at once? How do the other GPS sites do it?

I have been using Trailguru and they do it the way I described. It's free but you'll need to create an account to kick their tires.

So does GPS-APP have an option that will help me remember to turn the dumb GPS on before my ride? Laughing

Hehe, nope. It also won't remind you to recharge your batteries before you head out - that's a feature I need Smile

I see what you meant about the improving the import function - will work on improving that soon...

Here's another idea, although it may well be outside the scope of the app, it's something I've found myself needing from time to time.

Is it possible to include an option or script that would take a standard GPX file as input, and output the same file with the trackpoints in reverse.

I'm thinking this would be useful for out and back rides where the GPS was only on for 1/2 of the ride, but a total elevation profile could still be calculated.

It could also be useful to analyze a loop in reverse on paper.

Anyway, just a thought...

Absolutely, that's one of the features we plan to include. Right now I'm using a text editor called BBEdit to reverse tracks but it's pretty messy and involves manipulating the XML data directly. Yuck.

Don't know if you've been on GPSApp.net this weekend but we just updated the import functions and added sorting to the file/track/waypoint tabs. Also added even more waypoint icons and started posting to the blog where we'll be sharing tips for cleaning and sharing GPS data...

I was just on there but on my Lair o' the Bear ride this weekend I forgot to turn on my GPS. Both directions. Embarassed

I've edited the XML directly before and it's not much fun, and I'm not good enough with awk or sed to do it with a script.

That will be a really neat feature!

I can't tell if this is a bug or just my stupidity...

I uploaded two GPX tracks and named them.
I created a file.
I tried to add the two new tracks into the file I had just created and it wan't a choice in the dropdown.

I had to create a file from one of the tracks and then I could add the other one to it.

Does that make sense?

How did you create the file?

AFAIK, the only way to create a file is by starting with either a track or a waypoint. Once the file is created you can add additional tracks or waypoints using the "nearby" feature or by using the checkboxes and dropdown menu at the bottom of the track or waypoint tab.
