I'd like to say, that this article is sad and true. By my own observation biking ain't popular first of all because it requires stamina and skills. And that's why most kids choose x-box - they don't want to sweat and suffer from burning pain to rich their goals. Downhill and freeride attract more young riders because it's cool while it's easier to go downhill instead of pedaling that killer climb. And price of the bike is high.
But still, to make more kids get into mountain biking, we can show that this is more fun and exploring of a new, wonderful, places while you working out. Pick a true epic trail with breathtaking views and moderate terrain for his/her first ride and you'll get bigger chance to be asked for a ride next time.

Being 55 years old, I found mountain biking about 3 years ago and it still seems alive to me. I'm not into the extreme downhill rides or cliff jumping but do love to photograph it. To me mountain biking allows me to get out there and enjoy the many parks this country has to offer and explore while on your bike. You can ride like a hurricane or putt around like a turtle, just have fun. Make it what you can; as long as we have property/land managers that allow us mtn bikers to ride, then it will not be dead. Have fun, ride and leave only your tire tracks.

I am 14 and ride a $350 dollar bike. I can bike to Pocahontas State Park in Virginia. I hope I won't be the only one out on the trails once all you old folks stop riding

Im 13 and Im beginning mountain biking. A couple of my friends do it but they dont know where all the trails are. Were trying to get some kids at my school to try it out but we have to wait until breaks over. Plus, all we need is just a little xc trail in one of the forest preserves because the one we have already is illegal and it muddy all the time.

I see a young kid almost daily in my neighborhood doing laps but his dedication is not the norm. Talk about a downturn...look at some of the articles/editorials from about a hundred years ago after the 'Golden Age of Bicycles' gave way to the automobile...Interesting to see that user conflicts are nothing new...
