Mountain biking celebrity
Quick, what name comes to mind when you hear the phrase ‘mountain bike celebrity’ – Lance Armstrong? Floyd Landis? Although both have ridden mountain bikes they’re much better known for their successes on the road. Gary Fisher is a famous mountain biker but he’s not necessarily known for his riding skills OR his good looks. But there’s one Canadian mountain biker who is on the verge of celebrity for more than just her riding skills (though she definitely kicks ass on the Freeride circuit): Darcy Turenne.

Darcy is profiled in an article published by the Victoria Times Colonist that serves as a great introduction to this rising star. Darcy started mountain biking at age 14 and retired as one of the world’s top riders at 21 to cross over to free riding. Of course there are plenty of great riders, male and female, on the MTB circuit but Darcy stands out for one big reason: she’s hot.
Of course hotness is a pretty subjective thing but check it out: Darcy hosts a TV show seen in 60 countries (The Ride Guide), has appeared in Rolling Stone and Men’s Journal magazines, and has sponsorship deals with Oakley fashions and Norco. I don’t know about you but I doubt photos of Gary Fisher in a bikini and floppy hat will sell too many magazines.
Could this be the big break mountain biking needs to go mainstream? Only time will tell – keep your eye on Darcy!
