Cinema Sunday: Mountain Bike vs. Snowboard

Check out this video of a head-to-head race between a downhill mountain bike and a snowboard. They’ve even got massive jumps and berms thrown in:

I want to know what kind of tires he’s running…

  1. Man it’s a good thing the Mtn. Biker was allowed to pedal instead of just relying on gravity, and whatever tires he was using,I dont think he could have won that race if he didnt pedal.I know it’s a little biased for us mtn bikers because the bike won,but that was a good race.I wonder too though Greg, what tires was he using because I wonder if the fat tire bike tires would do better at staying on the surface of the snow more like the snow board so as to not dig in and slow the bike down..

  2. Video made my day. Must have been using deep open lugged mud type tires, because he was definitely getting some bite out of them. Will have to practice riding in the snow more, as opposed to falling down in the snow.

  3. “spikes hat er natürlich nicht” – it means that he didn’t have studs in his tires. It was supposed to be a regular bike. Awesome! I wonder how would a skier do.

  4. @mkedo & psoluch, thanks for clearing that up!

Being a mountain biker, a snowboard, AND a skier, I personally think a skilled downhill skier would have won that race. The in general, skies are much faster than snowboards: there is less contact with the snow, a more aerodynamic posture, and they have the ability to pole and skate through the flats while a snowboarder just crouches and tries to not slow down. A skier would have been able to put energy into the system in the couple of flats in the course and in the last crucial section, so I think the skier would have been victorious! :D

    What do you guys think?

  5. Does anybody wonder how one of those ski bikes would have done???I dont have any experience with a ski bike but it kinda makes me wonder how it would have done in a race like this.Somone should hold this race where everyone could show up with whatever set up they think could win this race and see what happens, different tires, ski bikes, skiers, fat tire bike(my curiosity, hahah)…Heck, somone could ride a peice of cardboard if they had enough nerve, hahahaa.
