Today GoPro announced a new version of the Hero4 action camera called the Hero4 Session that’s 50% smaller and 40% lighter than the Hero4 Silver and Black models. Surprisingly, it appears the Session gets roughly the same battery life as the Silver and Black models, though the Session maxes out at 1440p video resolution while the Silver and Black cameras go all the way up to 4K.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Hero4 Session is that it is waterproof (up to 10m) without a separate waterproof housing. Clearly this goes a long way toward reducing the size and weight of the Session, but it should also make things like swapping batteries and memory cards much quicker and easier. Not only that, GoPro has added a dual microphone system that switches mics to reduce wind noise.

The smaller form factor should make it even easier to find creative ways to mount the cameras. GoPro claims the new camera is even simpler to operate than previous models, with just a single button to start/stop recording and toggle between photo and video mode.

The new GoPro Hero4 Session will be available for purchase starting July 12 for $399.99 at GoPro.com.
