Thanks for the review. My son uses platform pedals (i.e. refuses to go clipless) and needs a proper shoe for them.

Well running these shoes with SPD pedals they work well. Running them with flats, you may have some contact (depending if your flats have pins in the middle of the pedal) if you keep the cleat in place. On my predator pedals (these suckers have massive pins), there is some striking of cleat to pedal pin. But on my Spank Spike pedals I was alright.

@Greg
Definitely the 80s and early 90s. I remember hightops and I wasn't around during the 70s.

Those shoes do look hot though (temperature wise).

@element22
Once you had the cleat installed, did you run them with flats at all? Was there any interference/scratching on the cleat from the pedals?

When you start hitting the really gnar stuff you will appreciate the high cut. For one thing (specially after tearing and chipping the bone off your ankle a few times) the added support is a key factor in keeping your ankles from getting over stressed on the big stuff. The extra padding also reduces the chances of debris from smacking you at those soft points ( something we had to deal with at Mountain Creek).

Spartan, +1 on that. Based on Syd's review, it sounds like the performance on these is great, I've never personally been a fan of high tops... looks so 70s to me (or 80s? I wasn't old enough to remember). That's why I went with the Maltese Falcon http://www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-gear/five-ten-maltese-falcon-shoe-review/
