Recently I rode a trail and rode my smallest and my biggest gear in the front. So I am not sure I would like a 1x9. however that said most times I ride middle and sometimes small (when I am exhausted) I think a 2x9 or 2x10 would be intriguing.

I can't believe you didn't say how many teeth on the front ring. It looks like maybe 28. Exactly what crank (and BB) is that? Where did you get it?

1x9 sounds fun, but the extra gear of 1x10 would be a real seller for me. Of course, since New England riding is so varied and many of the trails include some pavement getting to the next head, the 2x10 that splits the difference would be great.

I suppose with the sudden steep climbs and technical features, though, I'd need something with a bit more of a granny so... wait a minute! They already make a 3x9, and I have one!!! :)

But only if I spend enough time on the same bike to worry about upgrading...

@mtbgreg1, that's actually how I decided to make the switch to 1x9 the first time. My front derailleur was shot and wouldn't shift up or down so I was stuck in my middle ring for months while I looked for a new bike. Made me realize I didn't need those other rings anyway!

Haha dgaddis, I was going to ask that same question.

Anyways, on my most recent ride my front derailleur was refusing to shift down (I'm sure it just needs a little TLC), but as I was grinding away in my middle ring I was thinking that I could probably pull off a 1x10 if I really wanted to.

@seenvic, good point. Probably a 3x8 back then (or was it 3x7?). Back then I really didn't know or care!

I'm actually having a blast with my current 2x10 setup. However, it shipped with an 11-32 cassette, and with the 'small' chainring being a 26, it's brutal for Colorado Front Range climbing.

I was going to swap it out for a 12-36, but I haven't bothered, and I've started getting used to it. My quads are already noticeably bigger already!

I've been enjoying the 2x10 on my Sortie so much more than the 3x9 on my Trance it's making me contemplate giving 1x9 a try, especially since I'm hardly in the small ring. Maybe I'll give it a shot!

Also, check out these chainring guards from MRP for 2x10 set-ups. Looked all over for one and came across these. They have one model especially for SRAM 2x10. I ordered one and have it, but haven't installed yet, so I don't know how well it works. Looks like it will do the job well though.

See my comment about crackheads and wanting just one more gear. After 1x10 I'll give one of those Alfine 11-speed hubs a try too. :)

So why didn't you go 1x10? The 10spd cassettes have that nice 36T big cog which could come in handy.
