While generally new bike announcements are very scarce between Interbike and Sea Otter, fat biking is breaking the mold, with many companies thinking that the best time to launch a bike for riding in the snow is… well, winter–at least, in the northern hemisphere.
For your convenience, I’ve rounded up all of the new fat bikes released this fall and winter thus far. Basically, this list will catch you up from the latest releases at Interbike 2015 to present. Know of a brand-new fat bike that we missed? Let us know in the comments section below!
Ibis Trans-Fat
The release of Ibis’s Trans-Fat was probably the most notable fat bike release of the winter, thanks in large part to Ibis’s vocal cult following and the meticulous attention to detail that Ibis injects into every single one of their bikes. The Trans-Fat also offers some interesting design features never before seen in a fat bike.
To begin, the Trans-Fat uses the same carbon front triangle as the standard Ibis Tranny, but uses a different carbon rear triangle + 4″ wheels and tires and a RockShox 120mm Bluto fork. So, in theory, you could buy the parts to do an upgrade of your current Tranny to a fat bike, or you could buy the Trans-Fat and then convert it to a standard 29er bike in the summer.
Also, since the rear triangle detaches from the front, this may be the first travel-friendly fat bike in existence that can be easily broken down and stowed for flight.
