Vinokourov barred from mountain bike race

posted December 9, 2008 by trek7k

Velonews reports that Alexandre Vinokourov was barred from a Dutch mountain bike race this weekend despite being pre-registered by race officials. There’s no official word on why Vino wasn’t allowed to race in the Beach Challenge so we’ll be following this to see what happened.

Just in case you don’t follow the Tour de France, Vinokourov was a top road rider convicted of doping in the 2007 tour. Upon the announcement of his one year suspension from cycling (which expired in June 2008), Vino decided to retire from cycling. The mountain bike race this past weekend would have been his first race after his suspension/retirement.

What is it with these Tour de France guys riding mountain bikes back into cycling? I guess once Lance does it everyone has to follow ;)
