24 hours of pain for pleasure, sounds awesome. I really would like to do one of these in the near future. I may be going to Catalina Island this weekend for some riding with a couple friends Julius Syvanen and Sean Miller, check out the photos at http://cendit.blogspot.com once we make our voyage back.

I was fortunate to volunteer & take photos for the 24 hr race here in Alaska early this summer. Of course our turn out of riders was significantly less than most races but was very exciting none the less.
Like your write up here Element22, very thorough and very good advise.
We had a 12 hour class also in our race that a lot of riders did solo, I was even more impressed when I seen the number of riders that rode the entire 24 solo. Amazing.
One nice thing about a 24 hour race in Alaska in the summer; We don’t need no stinking lights! LOL

If anyone is interested there are photos from the race on my website, ‘24 Hours of Matanuska’ (link on my profile).

Most races have a charging station, but if not..get an inverter for your car/truck to keep your lights charged. As for water on the ride...I'd definitely go with a camelback version. The frame mount bottle holders but them in the line of fire for all of the muck and bacteria usually found on the trails and streams. I've had fellow racers succumb to intestinal issues as a result of drinking from contaminated bottle tops. Not that it can't happen with a camelback..it's just less likely. Also go for a mega CO2 cartridge like the Microflate 40g, because when you're several hours into your race and have to pump up an MTB tire on the trail...it's tiring (pun intended). The 40g will get you done in seconds and those minutes saved can be your margin of victory. These endurance events can wipe you for a week or so...

24 hours straight of riding? I think I would have to add methamphetamines or 30 lbs of coffee to my list of "things to bring" in order to keep me awake that long. I think I enjoy sleep WAY too much for that type of riding. Good luck anyhow.
