Kenda announces new US mountain bike series
Over the weekend Kenda announced a new national mountain bike series to replace the now defunct NORBA Nationals and National Mountain Bike Series. The Kenda Cup will be a bi-coastal series with East and West coast races culminating in a final September showdown at Interbike in Las Vegas. It’s great to see a national mountain bike series back in business but could the logo and tagline (“For the Love of the Sport”) be any cheesier? I used to think mountain biking was an extreme sport…
Of course this announcement hasn’t come without its complaints (my logo and tagline comments notwithstanding) and a close look at the schedule reveals why. The “West Coast Cup” portion is held entirely in the state of California – sorry Colorado and Utah – allegedly due to time constraints in getting the series put together. The East Coast portion is much more balanced with stops from Alabama to Vermont.
It’s little wonder a truly national mountain bike series has never really taken off with planning like this and sadly I predict we won’t see the Kenda series around for long. For now race organizers wish to remain anonymous (seriously) and I guess that’s because they figure there’s a good chance they’ll fail. Even the website, mtb-uscup.com doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy – though you can get info on the races there. Good luck Kenda Cup…
