  • That is awesome news! I did link the two when i lived in Mass, but having a legit trail to do so would be great. Hopefully those that ride the trails/are local can attend. Thanks for sharing.

Welcome to the sport! I’m in Charlotte (although originally from New England) and had to look up where Maggie Valley is – man are you in a great spot for mountain biking!! The mountain biking community is a great one, and even better that you are able to get out with you son. Have fun out there!!

I have a HiFi – which was folded into the superfly name… so hopefully my experience can be comparable. The HiFi was my first 29er and FS bike, also my first [i:c57c9mo5]real[/i:c57c9mo5] bike as it was the upgrade from my intro Trek 4300. Anyway, I absolutely LOVED that bike. I raced on it, I felt that it climbed really well and ate up everything I could throw at it (I’m not a big hit huckster so xc is perfect for me). I rode it when I was up in New England and even down in WV (Baker’s Ridge, Big Bear) and I thought it was a great bike for the terrain. I haven’t been on a Fuel since they went 29er – when I was upgrading I actually first looked at the Fuel but I decided I wanted to go 29er. Then it was a decision between the Rumblefish and the HiFi – I went HiFi because I wanted to race. Sure I could have raced on the Rumblefish (more of a trail bike, so maybe comparable to the Fuel) but I just like the more aggressive XC stance…

So, I’d give a thumbs up on the performance and feel of the HiFi/Superfly, but I don’t think you could really go wrong with any of the choices you mentioned. Ride em and see which just feels right on the trail.

    Hey Dan!

I’d definitely get into some local bike shops, see what they have, get on a couple, see what feels good. You really need to get on a bike and get the feel for it for your first bike as you may not know what size you need, or what head tube angle you like, etc from looking online without experience. Talking to the guys in the shop about what kind of riding you want to do, where you want to ride, etc can also help them guide you in the right direction as to what you may want to look at. It’s a great sport, welcome to the family!

Welcome to the sport, glad to hear you are having so much fun already!! I’m in Charlotte, and we definitely have a lot of riding up around here that you need to check out! Everything is pretty beginner friendly – some will push your limits, some you might walk the first few times – but like you said, if it doesn’t push you what’s the point? As you get more comfortable you def need to hit up Uwharrie and of course Dupont and Pisgah. When you head west to the mountains Dupont should be your first stop – it’s a nice intro to the area – the trails are a bit tamer then Pisgah proper, but it will give you a similar elevation profile so you’ll get a taste of the climbing out there.

Check out the Tarheel Trailblazers – you can always throw up a message on the boards there if you want anyone to show you around a new trail. Most are one way and very well marked, but it’s always nice to have someone show you the trail the first time to give you a heads up on any upcoming features. I’d offer to show you around but I’m off the trails right now getting my shoulder back in shape. Any questions though, feel free to throw my way!!

    Hey there,

New bikes are always exciting! I’m more than happy to share my opinion with you, but really what you FEEL is the better bike for you is what counts. What I mean by that is it is less about the specs list (although it is an important part) but more about the feel of the bike when you are on it. If you can, I would STRONGLY recommend that you get on both bikes, or at least get on similar 26" and 27.5" bikes to feel the difference between how the two handle and determine which fits you better.

As far as entry level bikes and getting into the sport… that is what they do – get you into the sport. As you get hooked (and trust me, mountain biking can be an addiction like no other) you will upgrade. Could be parts, could be a whole new bike. So again, this harkens back to which bike fits you best – will allow you to enjoy your riding the most – and get into the sport.

So my opinions on the two bikes. (Disclaimer: I ride a rigid singlespeed 29er – so you know there is something wrong with me.) I will echo the previous comment regarding the industry moving away from 26 and more toward 27.5 and 29… so if the thought was upgrading, you’ll have more options on the 27.5 side of things. The other major difference (other than their wheel sizes) would be their brakes. If I was stuck between the two, and felt comfortable on both I would def go for the 27.5 because it has disc brakes over the linear pulls. For me, even if the braking power/performance was the same, I’d say disc brakes are just inspire more confidence.

And, if you could consider the higher price point I would def go the airborne route. Much better drivetrain, and hydraulic disc brakes… this bike would be able to serve you for a while before feeling the need to upgrade. Plus the 29 is nice on the hard tail (larger wheels smooth out the chatter = increased confidence, easier on the body, etc). But again, you’d need to get on a 29er and see how it fits you, and how you feel handling it.

So in the end… it is up to you, but my advice would be go with what bike you feel most comfortable on.

I’ll be honest, there was some mud out there. I came across another rider out there who said it was the best it had been in a while. But the soft/slick trails at times led to walking, especially on some of the climbs. But still a fun place. I really miss all the rocky fun now that I’m down in the Charlotte area.

I rode Patapsco yesterday. AWESOME place to ride. I’m jealous of any locals out there.

Unfortunately, I checked in and updated the trail status again today – and it didn’t update the site… so something is still funky.

Try a 700 x 28c – worked for me for trainer rides. I got a Bontrager, something like this [url:1986hyq8]http://store.trekbikes.com/product/bontrager+h2+700c.do?sortby=ourPicks&refType=4[/url:1986hyq8]

And then I plugged my iphone into the computer…. and I updated – doh.

When I checked (through the phone itself) it didn’t come up with an update for the app… hopefully that will take care of things!

Sorry about that, and thanks for looking into it!!

in reply to: Mobile App Questions/Comments (Android+iPhone) #105032

I tried to check in and update the trail status for Renaissance Park when I was at the trail. I updated the status from my computer at home when I saw it hadn’t updated.

When I check in it goes from "checkin in…" to "checked in" with the green box checked.

For trail status it said "thanks for the status update"

(I just tried both right now to see if there was any change)

in reply to: Mobile App Questions/Comments (Android+iPhone) #105030

    Yup, as recent as yesterday

in reply to: Mobile App Questions/Comments (Android+iPhone) #105028

I’m using an Iphone. I did check for updates in the app store after I first noticed the problem but singletracks didn’t pop up as something needing an update.

in reply to: Mobile App Questions/Comments (Android+iPhone) #105025

I’ve noticed that lately when I "check in" at the trail it says on my phone that I did, as well as updating trail status, I get the "Thanks for updating" message… but when I get home and go to upload my ride data I notice that neither my check in registered on the site or my trail status update… is this a widespread problem, or is it just another craptacular feature of my old (aka – need to upgrade) iphone?
