Just curious what is your favorite trail you have ever ridden?

How about top 5 (in no particular order)

      Mag 7, Moab

      Wasatch Crest, UT

      Alpine, Oakridge, OR

Any trail at Grand Targhee Bike Park, Alta, WY

      Post Canyon, Hood River, OR

Oh ya, throw in a 6th: Porcupine Rim, Moab

I haven’t ridden anything outside of florida in the last 20 years, but I have in the last year ridden at Santos, Alifia, and Markham, Earhart, and Virginia Key. I think my favorite single trail is Route 66 at Markham.  Unfortunately because of the lack of clear trail markings it was the last day of my week there before we found it. All of them are excellent places to ride.

Since I’ve ridden over 500 trails, many of them among the world’s best, picking one is impossible.  If I was able to choose just one, I’d change my mind tomorrow or even in an hour from now.  Here’s a list of some of what I consider elite and could be my “favorite” at any given time:

      Arizona:  Hangover (Sedona)

      California:  Downieville Downhill (Downieville)

Colorado:  Lunch Loops (Grand Junction), Monarch Crest (Salida)

Montana:  Big Snowy Loop (Lewistown), Line Creek Plateau (Red Lodge)

Utah:  Gooseberry Mesa (Hurricane), Porcupine Rim (Moab)

Too tough to decide!  As a system it might be Cuyuna in Northern Minnesota or Brown County in Indiana.  Some of the best individual rides I’ve had are at Switchback in Kansas, Alafia in Florida, various trails in Sedona, and a handful of others in Colorado (Crested Butte or Breck.)  But some of the best short sections of trail I’ve ridden are flow trails in Breckenridge, CO or Cable, WI.  And I can’t forget bike parks where I just focus on the awesomeness of the trail and doing tricks without worrying about pedaling makes for a fun day but different.  I’ll go with Cuyuna for the variety of riding!

I’m going to give you my top five too.

1.) Enchanted Loop in Wilder Ranch State Park, Santa Cruz, California (It’s like you’re riding on the forest moon of Endor, and I say that after just riding the Endor trail in San Francisco. It’s also super steep and techy.)

2.) Rainbow Trail, Salida, Colorado (The bottom of the most popular route off the Monarch Crest Trail. It is super flowy and is the most picturesque trails I’ve ever ridden.)

3.) The Whole Enchilada, Moab, Utah (8,000 feet of descent in 28 miles from the treeline to the desert. That’s all you need to know.)

4.) Copper Harbor Trails, Copper Harbor, Michigan (Great downhill and enduro trails in a surprisingly remote part of Michigan. It’s a destination on the rise.)

5.) Minooka Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (My home trail. It’s full of berms, climbs and descents. Couldn’t be happier on it.)

Each trail adds a new dimension to my mountain bike experience, and these trails added the most.

Florida: Santos (but Graham Swamp might be the best 7 miles in the state)

      Texas: Palo Duro Canyon

Colorado: Fruita…..Kessel Run is 2 miles of pure fun with no danger.

Oregon: Oakridge is scared ground with lots of good rides, but I’m sort of partial to the Mt. Hood area.  Never had a bad ride….  Surveyor’s Ridge, Sandy’s Ridge, etc.  But I just love the Timberline to Town trail.  Just too easy to grab the Mt. Hood Express shuttle ($2) and roll.   Grab a pizza at the ZigZag Inn afterwards…..perfect day.

California: Paradise Royale, Susanville is a sleeper, but I really enjoy the Mt. Laguna Recreation area which includes Noble Canyon if you’re looking for a challenge.

*Disclaimer:  I haven’t ridden in many states and never rode at all until retirement.  There are days I am inspired and enjoy challenging myself, but most the time I just want a good peddle and those are the type of trails I enjoy.
