Have an older bike, Rockhopper, with a straight steer tube.  Can’t seem to find a good fork for it.  Can I buy a fork with a tapered tube and replace it with a straight tube?  100-120 travel

King makes a crown race for a 1.5″ lower bearing and 1 1/8 steer tube which allows transition to a tapered fork on some frames. Not sure if it would work in the Specialized.  Chain Reaction has them. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/en/chris-king-crown-race/rp-prod2043

Not sure how a different crown race would help in this instance.

If you’ve got a straight steerer tube, you’re unfortunately going to need a fork with a straight steerer as well. Is it a 26″ or 29″ wheeled bike? You may have trouble finding a brand new fork with a straight steerer, but I bet you can find one secondhand.

I had no idea there was such a headset, nice to know and thanks 🙂

29″ wheels.  Happy to buy a used fork, just not finding much of a selection.

That Chris King headset is for bikes with a 44mm straight head tube, which the Rockhopper does not have.

44mm tubes are used a lot on new steel and and Ti frames since it’s easier to make a straight tube as opposed to a tapered one. The added benefit is that you can run a wide variety of forks with a 44mm just by selecting the correct headset. Straight 1 1/8″, straight 1.5″, and tapered will all work with a 44mm head tube.

For an example, check out Kona’s Ti Honzo frame: http://www.konaworld.com/honzo_ti_frame.cfm

This is good info, but can anyone answer the original question?  Can I replace a tapered steer tube with a straight steer tube?

You will probably have to check with a Specialized shop.

@Gdb49 – I replied the other day, but it looks like it got lost.

To answer your question, no you will not be able to replace a tapered steerer with a straight steerer. The hole in the crown of the fork would be too large for the straight steerer to fit in.

the original question was if he could use a tapered fork in a straight frame, and there are adapters for some frames.

@AlvinMullen no, reread his original question again.

And also, you cannot “adapt” a tapered steerer to fit in a 1 1/8″ head tube.
