As a beginner every trails was a new and exciting adventure. There is nothing like finding a new trail that reminds you why you ride. The first time I rode Buffalo Creek was like that for my riding partner and me. Just couldn’t wait to go back, wanting to get better so we could ride it the way it was meant to be ridden. Since then we have found a few other trails like that, but want to know what we are missing. We always enjoy riding, but there just some trails that leave you with a special feeling, like a drug. Rode South Shore at Pueblo yesterday and had that exact feeling. Here are some of the trails we have ridden, please add any Front Range trails that you feel are special enough to belong on this list.
Blackjack Trail and all the others at Buffalo Creek
      Halls Ranch
      Curt Gowdy
      South Shore at Pueblo Res.
Palmer Park and Ute Park in the Springs
Cheyenne Mtn area- Section 16 etc…
      Wathem Trail in Horsetooth Park
      What are we missing?

      Missing:

All of the various sections of the Colorado Trail
      Dakota Ridge and Red Rocks
      Dragon’s Back
      Lair O The Bear

      …and many more…

    • #114654

      Deer Creek
      Colorado Trail

    • #114655

      Mt Falcon
      White Ranch
      Apex
      Golden Gate Canyon
      3 Sisters / Alderfer
      Bergen Peak

If only some website had a database of Front Range Trails. 😼

    • #114656

Other special trails in the Springs area:
Cheyenne Mountain State Park (not part of Cheyenne Canyon–great trails for all ability levels)
Red Rock Canyon Open Space (if you know which trails to ride)
Limbaugh Canyon (requires a big finish on pavement to avoid private property, but it’s worth it)
Monument Trails/Stoopid Trail (Stoopid is gnarly fun)

Goodies near Denver not yet mentioned:
Centennial Cone (Not the most interesting singletrack, but great scenery and bikes only on every other day)

      Nederland/Peaceful Valley area
Sourdough Trail (rocks, rocks and more rocks)
South St Vrain (steep, technical, narrow, challenging)
Buchanan Pass (short but uber-sweet and mucho techy with killer scenery)

Other special trails north of the border near Curt Gowdy:
Headquarters/Happy Jack (cross country ski network that makes for excellent summer singletrack)

      Greg,
      Dragon’s Back? Maybe Devil’s Backbone?

Thanks to all for the great suggestions. I will ride all of them and shoot you a quick review.

I know you’re right, but don’t you think there are some trails that are on such a different level that no one can argue their greatness? Who doesn’t love Buffalo Creek or Halls Ranch? Everytime I ride a place like those, I can’t focus on anything but going riding again. Work suffers and my wife accuses me of loving my bike more than her for the next few days. Everyone has those rides and I thought that would be a fun list to put together.

    • #114663

Believe it or not, I’ve met a few people who don’t get excited about Buff Creek and more than a few who don’t like Hall Ranch.

As long as we’re all individuals, we’re likely to find both awesome and disappointing. Part of the joy lies in the discovery–when you find a place that, at least for you, meets or exceeds the hype. My list of such rides is fortunately much longer than my list of disappointing rides.

I agree that every ride listed on this thread so far are "on such a different level" and highly encourage you to explore them all. Hopefully your experience will confirm.

I would never imply Buffalo Creek was the best in the world.. I have only been riding for 8 months and have not ridden enough to even get in that discussion. When I read many of your post, I am not even in your league of riding or trail experience. When I was climbing I found that as you got to know the people who rated and reviewed the climbs, you found people that you tended to agree with their general descriptions and ratings. I have already found a few people on this site who have given great advice and when I read their ratings on rides it fits the way I found the ride. I have enjoyed every trail so far and figure if someone loved a trail the worst that could happen is riding a trail that you don’t love. I will ride every trail list on this thread and probably find a few trails that make my week. My feelings are a little hurt that someone doesn’t like Halls Ranch 😀 Hell, your post alone dwarf my riding by ten fold. With a job and 2 kids my time is limited and any help on great trails is appreciated. Wish I could quit my job and ride everyday, but the bank said no!

Didn’t take it that way. I would say that in my very limited experience that the most fun I have had on a bike is on the Blackjack Trail. Stayed pumped for weeks afterwards. Can’t wait for the trail that knocks it off the top of my list- what a great day that will be. Hope it happens many times!

    • #114670

While we are on great trails… What about ski resorts? Rode Winter Park and came home with a sore jaw from smiling so much, partly from wearing a full face helmet for the first time. Found some of the trails very intimidating, but thrilling. Lost count on how many crashes, so need some work on the skills. Thinking about a season pass for next year.

    • #114671

If you liked Blackjack, definitely check out Dakota Ridge.

Tomorrow’s snow should clear off in a few days and it will be ridable again.

Yeah, but it is really the Singletracks algorithm that results in it be ranked #1; a truly scientific survey would probably produce a completely different result. Gotta keep the salt shaker handy when looking at rankings like this one.

I think the point that some people are trying to make is that there’s no such thing as a "scientific" way to measure how good or how bad a mtb trail is because so much of it is personal preference.

Well said. Even my own personal favorite might change by next week. 😆

    • #114679

I don’t disagree with the idea that we are all different and will like different trails, but I stand by the idea that if it thrills someone else, that at worst it will be an average ride for someone else. No matter what system you use someone will disagree, that doesn’t stop it from being helpful to many of us. Also, read the thread that was linked from Greg’s top 10 ride and whether or not those trails are still on your list or not, it was a great trip. I’m a little jealous! I’m going to ride all the trails listed on this thread and I’ll bet it’s a great experience. Hope my favorite trail changes everytime. Dakota ridge is first on the list of next rides. With all the riding some of you have done if you even liked a trail, I’ll probably think it was amazing. Have not ridden outside of the Front Range area, but it sounds like I got lucky with location to start MTB riding. Appreciate all the feed back-learning everyday from this site.

This all goes back the the "geographic skewing" of the ratings. A certain level of accessibility is required to ride a trail. We’d probably all put The Whole Enchilada and The Downieveille Downhill ahead of Buff Creek, but how often do we actually get to ride those? But Buff Creek is always there for us, without requiring us to take a week’s vacation or dip into the kids college fund. Maybe it deserves extra points on that account.

Just be sure it’s rideable. The top of the route is 11K feet, so it doesn’t melt out until late spring or even summer in a good snow year (and by then, the bottom of the route is scorching hot). Fall is best, plus you get the aspens up high! But even if you go in spring and are limited to just the original porc, you’re still getting a primo ride! It’s pretty impossible to not have a great time even if you can’t do the whole thing.

Looking for an epic spring trip. Would Fruita be better in the spring and hit Moab/ The Whole Encilada in the fall? Thinking of taking one of those 3 day MTB coarses somewhere outside of the area, to learn and experience a new biking area. Any suggestions on areas or camps? Tired of sucking, need to take a class and speed this process up!

    • #114685

Fruita and Moab are both great spring trips, you might just have to skip the very top section of the Enchilada is all.

    • #114686

I did a 3-day BetterRide camp and it was worth every penny. The improvement in my techncial skills was fantastic. The unexpected benefit was that the improvement in technique meant I could execute difficult moves while expending much less energy–so the improvement in efficiency translated directly into not getting winded so easily and added endurance for long rides.

Ditto on Fruita and Moab. Even if you can’t ride the very top of the Whole Enchilada (Burro pass or Burro and Hazzard), just hitting UPS, LPS and/or just the old Porc proper, you’re gonna have a great time . . . + all the other magnificent stuff Moab has. Ditto Fruita. Since they’re reasonably close to the Front Range, you should have no trouble hitting one or both each season.

My personal preference is to hit Fruita in the Spring and Moab in the Fall, and try to squeeze in another trip to one or both somewhere else along the line. Since Fruita is on the way to/from moab, you can always hit both (and other great rides along the I-70 corridor )in a single trip (time permitting).

    • #114689

Sold. I had heard good things about BetterRide, but it’s nice to hear it from someone without a vested interest. Looked them up and they give lessons in several great spots. Wish I didn’t have to wait for spring. Thanks for another great peice of advice.

    • #114690

So all of you that did participate in this thread and seemed to think Buffalo Creek did not belong on top. What would you pick as the number one ride if you could only pick one trail?

    • #114691

Here’s a list of singletracks I would ride ahead of Buff Creek. While the length of the list might imply I don’t think highly of Buff Creek, nothing could be further from the truth–there’s just a lot of really stupendous singletrack out there! (and these don’t even take into account all those still left on my bucket list–I haven’t even ridden Crested Butte or Durango).

When I’m done, I’ll only be a couple hundred trails behind you. I should get them in next season- at least 90% of them if not all. Bought my bike in June and rode that many trails this year, so I have a chance. Already have a few knocked out. Can’t wait to hit the Fruita, Grand Junction, Moab areas, the videos look amazing. Will take the Betterrides class in Fruita in Spring, thanks to the advice of all of you. Any great winter riding in Colorado? South Shore Pueblo is the only spot I know of so far. Live in Colorado Springs, but willing to travel.

I have no life, very boring person, leaves a lot of time for riding. Along with an obsession to get good at this sport-tired of sucking!!!

sounds like you’re not married too, eh 😃 ?
enjoy the rides man, I live in Littleton within a few hours drive from a lot of great trails here in the front range. Just got the mtb bug and I can always hear the trails calling too, but have to work it around my family duties 😃

Has anyone rode the Wasatch Trail in Telluride? Does it belong on this list? Looks insane, killer views. Is it too difficult for the average guy to ride?

    • #114701

Sorry about that- Colorado. Bugs me when others forget to give their area and here I go and do it. Telluride is a mountain/ski community. Watch the video and read the reviews on here- it’s crazy beautiful and just plain crazy.

By definition, anything in Telluride would not be considered "Front Range"

IDK about right now specifically, but I’ve heard that in general they stay mostly dry all year long.

Give Absolute Bides in Salida a call. They stay current on local trail conditions.
