How much of a difference is there between a 8 speed and 9 speed crank/chain ring? I may have a good deal on a upgrade crank for my bike but will a 9 speed crank/chain ring work on my 8 speed bike?

I’ve been riding an 8 speed bike with a 9 speed Race Face crank for a while now. No issues at all. My research pointed towards 8-9 being interchangeable while 9-10 could cause issue. This was due to chain width. 10 speed chain width was not compatible with 9 speed hard parts, but 8 speed components work well with a 9 speed chain. My experience has reflected this.

So would I need to buy a 9 speed chain or use my existing 8 speed chain. I will have an 8 speed cassette and derailers…

I’ve heard the same thing. Haven’t tried it personally though, so you can take that with a grain of salt.

I did not swap out my chain, STI, just replaced the cranks/CR’s. My cassette, front and rear derailleurs and chain are all from my 8 spd setup.
