I love wide tires, the wider the better. I really want a FS fat bike for my main rig but in the meantime, I’m loving my 29er to 27.5+ conversion.
Has anyone else converted their 29er? What rims/tires did you use?
For my Tallboy I went with the safe choice of WTB Scraper rims and Trailblazer 2.8 tires. I did try a set of Vee Tire Trax Fatty 3.25 tires but they were way too wide to fit my rear triangle. (There might’ve been room on the fork–I may need to revisit these and see for sure.)

2.8! Wowzers!
If I ever came across a set of tweener rims that would fit my Scalpel, I’d deffo give it a shot but I daydream of putting fatty tires on it just to help with the squish factor. I’d flash a nun for a less jarring ride. Unfortunately, neither the chainstays nor the lefty lend themselves to fatter tread.
Have you noticed any downside at all to running a tiny bit smaller than intended rim?

Do you think a 3.0 trax fatty would have fit back there?
I was able to get my fit a Trailblazer 2.8 in the rear of my 650B frame on my 21mm rims. I’m hoping I still have same luck with some 30mm rims.
The 3.0 bridger cleared and if my wheel was 100% true it would, but ever couple knobs would brush.
I want to know which tires fit in between a trailblazer 2.8 and abridger 3.0.

The conversion did drop my bottom bracket between 0.25 and 0.5 inches so I do get more pedal strikes than usual. Other than that, I haven’t really noticed any difference with the smaller rim diameter. With the tire, I’m still pretty dang close to 29 inches.

Wow, I’m impressed that even the 2.8 fits on a 650b frame!
Aaron is testing the Bridger right now and also the Trail Boss 3.0. The Trail Boss is a little more squarish than the Bridger so it might have slightly more clearance. Even so, it’s about the biggest tire you can fit (rear) on the Pine Mountain we have in for review–and that’s a dedicated 27.5+ bike.
I’d love to see more 2.8″ tires and lucky for us, we won’t have to wait very long. Maxxis has 3 on the way: the Chronicle 2.8, Rekon+, and Ikon+.

I know, I couldn’t believe that about the frame too. But fatter rims will tell. I even think I can squeeze a 29X1.85-2 back there. A 29X2.4 Ardent on i29 rims was just a tad too big.
Frame clearance is starting to become a pet peeve for me. That very same same 650B+ tire that fit in my Trigger couldn’t fit my new 2016 Kona Honzo DL/AL, so I sold it. I was about to sell my Trigger. But now I’m reconsidering it. Thinking about getting a new fs 29er, and tire clearance is kind of my determining factors (because there are so many good bikes to chose from). When I hear about something like that Pine Mtn clearance, I get sad, because with helps from your review that steel beast was on my want-list (vs the jamis dragon slayer) .
Anyway, that Santa Cruz fitting some bigger tires moved up in my ranks for next bike, when I sell Trigger (if I do). Still need a hardtail replacement (might be the Loki or a Superfly!)..
That Rekon+ looks like it will destroy anything in its path. That Ikon+ looks just right! Now, I can’t wait for them to come out. Will be riding some Vees in the meantime.
Thanks for the info!
