On the race track, 18-year-old Ryan Geiger is a mountain biking prodigy.

In the bike shop, he’s just another one of the guys.

At Absolute Bikes in downtown Flagstaff, Geiger sweeps the floors and wrenches on rental bikes. He says his job is lovingly referred to as the "shop grommet."

In short, he does whatever needs done.

That is also what Geiger did on Aug. 11, when he broke the Leadville Trail 100 MTB course record time for riders 19 and younger, completing a 100-mile ride through the Rocky Mountains in 7 hours and 27 minutes. His time was fast enough that he also would have won the men’s 29 and younger category.

"It was awesome. It was probably the biggest accomplishment I’ve had so far," he said.

The feat is made more remarkable because he had to pass some 1,500 other riders along the way. Geiger had to start near the back of the pack.

"You really have to do sketchy moves to get through people," he said.

Geiger hopes that he’ll be able to shave even more time off his record next year, when he’s allowed to start near the front of the pack.

He hopes to make a career out of mountain bike riding, but in the short term he plans to take some well-deserved time off from training. Geiger says no matter how much he rides or trains, he still loves pushing himself to progress.

"I love going out with the guys and shredding," he said. "That’s good stuff."

More than a little understatement there. Sounds like an amazing guy.

100 mIles in 7:27 – that’s WOW, especially he started from the back. Won’t be surprised if he will brake own record next year

especially he started from the back.

I asked Georgia Gould about that in my interview as she got a bad start in the Olympic race. She said it makes a huge difference. Physically, you have to put down bursts of energy to pull off passes and effectively ride faster than the leaders. Mentally, you can see the leaders pulling away and you can’t do anything about it, and those two things combined often lead to dumb mistakes and crashes. She said getting a good starting position is huge.

So I totally agree, this kid will be just off the front row next year (right behind the pros) and he won’t have all that traffic to contend with.

It will be fun to see how he does.

This is what happens when a young adult is not told that lie "you cannot do that" Awesome.
