Description: This is the main "outer loop" at chicopee. The singletrack is generally wider and easier than the trails on the inside of the loop. There are still several challenging but fun sections such as champagne hill, and the boardwalks in the lowlands. As with most of the trails at Chicopee, expect there to be a ton of roots! Also, be prepared for a deep stream crossing year round near the old dam, and a short gravel road grind back to the Tortoise trail to return to the trailhead.

TRAIL REVIEWS   review this trail

The White Tail Loop comprises the majority of the outer loop at chicopee and is the main intermediate trail. It is also crucial to use to connect to the more advanced trails. In and of itself, it's a super fun ride with excellent flow, a few stiff climbs, some great downhills, and tons of roots to go around! While White Tail is rated as easier than the interior loops, I think it actually has more roots, probably due to it's older age.

White Tail is the outer most loop as well as the connector from the beginner trail to the intermediate/advanced trail. I always start at the west starting section of this trail (not granny hill). It is an awesome little single track down hill. Once you cross the little (1.5 foot wide) creek come up hill and take a right. Left will take you to Red Tail. Follow the Gravel till you see the trail re-enter the woods (less than a quarter mile). After entering the woods you will continue on the outer loop to the north starting point of Copper Head trail. Here you can jump on Copper head or continue on White tail. The next section of white tail is a short trip to the north starting points of Flying Squirrel. Again you can jump on Flying Squirrel or continue on the out loop. The next section of White tail it gets interesting. You begin a rocky, rooty, rutted (good rutted) decent down hill. Its pretty technical and too much front brake here is not a good thing. Its a blast though to bomb down it. Definitely worth it. Once you hit the bottom you climb up Champain Hill and begin descending again. Very Rooty, but not too technical. At the bottom the outer loop will appear to split into three paths the sharp left uphill is the way out. The trails to the right are Flying Squirrel and will lead you back to the north section of the trail. After the sharp left up hill you will head down hill to the big (not that big) creek crossing. From here you head up Granny Hill (It gets easier with time) and make your way back onto the beginner trail.
