Description: The trail is interesting geologically with small and large lava rock scattered throughout. There is one place on the Vulcan Volcano (northern) where a bit of walking to the saddle may be required. The goat heads may get you - so be prepared. Also, there is no escape from the sun out here, so ride early or late. http://www.nps.gov/petr/

The trails are all connected, and can be ridden as a large figure-8 starting either direction. Stay off the access roads to have more fun. Take two trips around the three volcanoes to make it more meaningful.

All I'll add is if you go up and down and around each volcano (4) you'll have a nice 14 miler that will test and improve all your skills. Great training and no hikers like the foothills...so you can bomb descents!

This was better than I expected--being mostly doubletrack, I didn't expect much. However, there are some good climbs up onto the flanks of the Volcanos. These climbs are full of rocks, both embedded and loose, and will test your balance, strength and technical skills. You can also add pumice to your repertoire of riding surfaces! This trail is not as fun or scenic as the trails East of ABQ, but they're fully exposed/receive less snow/dry out faster, making them a good midwinter alternative. I rode it after some recent midwinter moisture so the trails were nicely packed, but I'm betting the sand can get pretty intolerable during dry spells (which is most of the year in ABQ).

Some deep sand in parts. But overall, It was fun for a quick ride in the westside.

Sweet ride, just take PLENTY of water and G2. Oh, and camera batteries. I had one extra set but they died too. Loose rock in many spots, very loose deep sand in some spots. No shade!!!!!
