Description: 2 loops (Orange and Violet) plus the Red spur in development. Orange (2.5) miles is the easier with moderate climbs, some creek crossings and rock gardens. Violet (2 miles) is more challenging with longer technical area and a steeper climbs.
Both trails intersect in the middle of the forest so one can vary their rides. Weekend will see more hikers, but its never crowded. LOTS OF DEER. Watch for ticks in the spring and when in doubt call ahead for conditions. 913-312-8833 (The park will close it if its too wet)

Since I wrote the last review there has been an exciting new trail addition. The Red Spur has been extended to become The Red Loop. The spur was 1.75 miles long then you needed to double back. It has now been extended 1.3 miles to connect back to the Violet loop. Some of the trail just follows an existing gravel road but much of it is nice tight single track through woods. This addition makes the entire trail system 7.3 miles long with no doubling back. There is also a new map indicating plans to extend the Red Loop in the future.

Shawnee Mission Park is a challenging intermediate single track trail system. There are two access points on the orange loop which is the easiest. The first is just short of the marina near a parking lot on the road the second is near the tennis court across from the marina parking lot. This loop is 2.3 miles long and I like it for multiple laps. The second, violet, loop is accessed either from the orange loop of from a trail at the end of the dam. It is more difficult and is just short of two miles long. The most challanging ride is the red sput which is accessed from the violet loop and is 1.75 one way (3.5 round trip). It is actually my favorite ride and has what I would consider to be some advanced technical sections. The trail is closed during or after heavy rain. To check if it is open call 913-312-8833.

The guys who have been working on this trail have done some great work. the new new red spur even though half complete is a tramendous addition. The violet loop has been recently cleaned for a race and the technical rocky sections are now easier to clean than earlier in the year. The red spur will eventually become a full loop around 6-8 miles i believe and they are working on adding a park area. Getting better all the time.

Fast, Rocky, a bit technical (This is where I started) and getting better and better, new free ride section being built and trail is about 7 miles now with about 5+ in the works. Two loops, beginner and intermediate with the new "Red" spur turning into a harder loop.
