Description
The basic layout is two trails. The Falcon Ridge/King of the Mountain route switchbacks up 8.3 miles and 1,700 verts to the top. It is mostly smooth, but also has some rock gardens and a couple mandatory (or almost mandatory) dismounts. There are a few short drops along the way. Most of the elevation is gained on the switchbacks as the traverses between are generally level or even briefly downhill. Although the average grade is only 6%, the climb is taxing, especially given the altitude (topping out at 10,350 feet.

The other trail is the Golden Eagle, dowhnill only. It's not a gnarly-type downhill, but rather a pretty buff hardpack trail with lots of bermed corners and great flow. It will tempt you to go very fast.

If you're not up to the full meal deal, you can turn around at any point on the King of the Hill trail and there are a few bailout points where you can cross over to Golden Eagle and drop to the bottom.

Review: This is a great place to spend a few hours, especially if you've ridden everything else in the ABQ area. The climb feels harder than it should be given the grade, but it's worth it. The 360 degree view from the summit is fantastic and either dowhnill route is a nice reward. The King of the Hill will allow you to downhill all that techy goodness you struggled through uphill and Golden Eagle will give you a super fast, swoopy, ear-to-ear grin finish (do be careful the first time though as a couple of the switchbacks sneak up on you real fast). This is also a good place to escape the heat. when I left ABQ, it was 91 degrees; a half hour later it was 69 on the mountain. If you don't want to climb, the ski area runs the lifts for bikers on weekends and holidays from Memoral Day through Labor Day.
