Description: The forest service rates this as "Easy", however they were probably
describing it for hikers as I found this a bit more of a challenge than some
flat singletrack along a river. The trail follows the Clackamas river, and has
some good climbs to the top of bluffs that overlook the river and hills that
run all the way back down to the river bank. This is a shared use trail
however I only saw one set of hikers and one pair of bikers the whole time
I was out there on a sunny Saturday. This is a good thing since the trail is
pretty narrow in spots with lots of tight switchbacks and turns and technical
spots. The trail runs from Rainbow campground to Riverside campground for
about 4.5 miles, making an out and back about 9 miles. Probably the best
time of the year to go is after the Forest Service closes these campgrounds
for the season as this probably cuts down on the foot traffic.

Great trail & fantastic scenery. There are numerous chances to access the river with great fishing (saw spawning salmon in late Sept.) and plenty of swimming holes. I agree with weazel561 and would rate this trail strong beginner or intermediate level. The first half mile will give you a good taste of what the rest of the ride is like, of course riding as an out & back you can turn around at any point. Not much elevation gain but you gain and loose the same 200 ft several times, and some of these transitions are pretty steep. There are also a few switchbacks that can sneak up on you. I really liked this trail and am bummed its so short, its not one that you would travel that far just to ride it, nor do I think there are any others real close. But if you happen too be in the neighborhood it’s a blast!
