Description
Overend Mountain Park is named after Durango’s favorite son and local

bicycle folk hero, Ned Overend. It’s conveniently located right at the edge

of Durango, so you can easily get out for a quick and fun single-track

experience when you’re in Durango.

The network is well marked with signs at major junctions, so just remember

the names of the trails you want to hit. There are trails that exit the park

and go “off the map” out onto BLM land if you are looking for a longer

adventure.

There are multiple loop options you can explore after you are familiar. To

get you familiar, here’s a fun five-mile route. From either of the suggested

trailheads, turn right (north) onto Crestview Tr. Turn left onto Hidden Valley

Trail. Turn right on Grabens Loop (staying left at the unmarked junction).

At the next sign, turn right for a fun, banked descent down Star Wars. Turn

right on Perins Gulch for a nice climb up to Hogsback. Follow the ridge until

you are faced with an OMG-Durango-gnarly climb. Go up and over the top if

you are an over-the-top gonzo rider. Saner folks can shake their heads in

disbelief and turn around here and retrace your route back to Perins Gulch.

Stay on Perins Gulch until you can turn left and climb the lower half of Ned’s

Hill. If you are out for a shorter ride, turn right on Englehart’s Trail and

another right onto Crestview to return to your car. If you want to extend

your fun, don’t turn onto Englehart’s Tr. But continue up Ned’s Hill Trail.

Turn left on Grabens Loop. You can choose to do Star Wars again if you

liked that. Otherwise, complete Grabens Loop and take Hidden Valley back

around to Crestview Trail and your car.

Review: Spent a week in Crested Butte and Durango riding top rated trails. This was on our list and did not dissapoint. It has lots of trail options. There is a lot of use by the local cyclists, I got a lot of the best info from the locals. I rode this a couple times in the evenings after riding other trails in the morning. It is easy to get to from any hotel in downtown Durango. Trails can be a challenge, especially if you are an east coast flat lander. Make sure you do these trails when in the area.

Review: This is a cool trail system located right in town with a good variety. The Hogback trail is pretty ridiculous just looking at it (you can see it from town, heading straight down a steep, exposed ridge). This trail shoulda been named Ned's run - I'm sure it takes a lot of nerve to ride this one. The trails we rode didn't seem to flow exceptionally well - awkward switchbacks and climbs - but overall it's a fun place to ride.

Review: Overend Mt Park, or "Test Tracks" is constantly evolving. Trails 2000 continues to build new trails. I've lived in Durango for 20 yrs and seem to be able to ride brand new single track all the time. Some of my favorite trails here are Ella Vita, Star Wars, Browns Ridge, and 8 Bells. Let Durango Mountain Bike Tours show you the way. got to mountainbikedurango.com * Review edited 10/8/2011
