Mountain Biking La Perouse Bay

  Add a review
#29 of 33 mountain bike trails in Hawaii
#21,977 in the world

A trail and hiking path across the cooled lava flow from 10,000-foot Haleakala into the scenic La Perouse Bay, which is famous for snorkeling. Bring multiple spare tires, for pinch flats are common across the lava rocks. The trail follow the coastline and King's Highway, an ancient Haiwaiian footpath, for 2 miles to Cape Hanamanioa and then continues north up the winward coast. In the winter, look for whales off the coast. You will have plenty of time as the lava trail frequently becomes unridable with deep lava gravel. Maybe you should just walk the trail, but the destination is worth the trip and is made more interesting with a bike ride from Wailea and a stop at Big Beach and its taco stands along the way.
