Trail Q&A
Rider Questions

Q: I am looking into a new full suspension machine. For demo purposes, I have selected a Giant Trance 650b and a Specialized stumpjumper 29er, I want to do West Ridge, Spring Creek, and Wathen as a loop. How is that? Any particular direction or suggestions for the demo ride? -Ryan Ruhle

A: Those don't link up too perfect as a loop, but you should absolutely ride DOWN Wathen. If you do that, the top of the Wathen trail is at the Westridge intersection. Assuming you are coming from the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space Trail Head, I would do the following: -Head up the South Ridge Trail from the parking lot. -Continue onto Soderberg Trail. -Take a left on Spring Creek Trail. -Continue past the sign for Wathen. This is the "bottom" of the trail. -Climb to the 4-way intersection at the top and turn left on Towers Trail. -Make your next left on to Westridge Trail. -Turn left on Wathen and enjoy. -The rest is up to you, but I'd assume you would just retrace your steps once you got back to the Spring Creek Trail. Review: Amazing riding 10 minutes outside Fort Collins. Highly recommend riding Wathen in the downhill direction. Trails are well marked but a map is helpful to find your way back to the trailhead.

There are certainly sections of trail that are almost unridable due to large rocks and loose conditions, but overall these trails are a ton of fun with endless views of the city or RMNP. If you park in the main parking area, be prepared for a lung buster up the gravel road. Don't worry though, it's worth it!

Review: I parked at the listed trail head (horsetooth mountain)' which does not seem to be recommended as your only option is South Ridge both out and back.

Great mix of trails of varying difficulty, in a fantastic natural environment. Like the atmosphere of the place.
Trails are well marked.

Lots of hikers around horsetooth rock. Most seemed to be young, hot females on a weekday - so I was unnaturally lost, and prepared to ask for directions for a change! Lol

Review: This park is awesome, but not for the bronchially challenged. We rode the twin loops as they are described in the new CO guide by Hickstein. He puts a lot of thought into his routes.

Review: I started at the Soderberg TH ($6) and rode Swan Johnson trail to Shoreline trail - both very smooth and flowy. Then I took Sawmill trail up to Logger's trail and hooked up with a local MTB'er who was actually older than me (I'm 49, he was 55). He took me up Logger's to Mill Creek Trail and we ended up in nearby Lory SP (Timber trail). At this point we headed back down the mountain to the Valley trail then back to Soderberg via Nomad trail. A very entertaining ride and a bit technical at times but much better than nearby Timber trail (experts only).
The trails are mostly groomed and Loggers traverses through some nice foresty areas. This wasn't a difficult ride but definitely intermediate. I'll definitely come back to explore the other trails in the system.

Similar Trail: Timber trail (Lory SP).

Review: Awesome trail system. So many different trails for different riding abilities. You have to go several times to ride all the different trails. A challenging but rewarding ride is as follows: start at Soder Berg trail head and ride Towers road to Spring Creek, then take Spring Creek to the service Road all the way to Horse Tooth Rock, ride Wahthom Trail back down to Spring Creek, then take a service branch off Spring Creek back to Towers Road, Climb back up Towers Road to Loggers Trail, Ride that to Saw Mill then Take Saw Mill back to the vehicle. This ride will take a good chunk of the day and it will show the diversity of the trail system. Highly recommended.

Review: This trail offers a nice climb and some interesting singletrack. I would recommend climbing the fire road to the Silver Creek trail head and taking that down to Sawmill. Along this route you will encounter some fast singletrack as well as a couple of moderately difficult technical sections (all ridable).

Review: This was a great ride, tons of technical, single track, and if you love to climb the fire road is a killer! I left some flesh behind on this ride, but it was well worth it. Not a ride for a beginner! Lots of loose rock and sand in the technical sections and if you fall, you may fall for awhile!

Similar Trail: Lyons maybe...not sure tho its unique
