Description
The Colorado Trail is a 535-mile trail connecting Denver and Durango,

Colorado. It has many epic sections with great singletrack and great scenery.

The easiest way to ride it without arranging shuttles is to choose a segment

and ride it out-and back. There's a lot to be said for out-and-back rides:

uphill grunts become downhill hoots; there is a whole new view to be looking

at; in general, the coming back portion feels like a whole new trail.

This route is the southwestern terminus going out-and-back from the Junction

Creek Trailhead just outside Durango. In just over 9 miles of climbing, you will

reach a highpoint which is a good place to turn around. You will know you are

there because there is a great view point to grab a snack, and the trail starts

dropping steeply down the back side.

Review: This ride is also know as the High Point since you climb from the trailhead almost non-stop until you turn around near the 9 mile mark. This section of trail near durango is somewhat busy, but very well maintained and some really fast and mildly technical riding. Gudy's Rest provides a nice overlook back to Durango after the mile and a half of switchbacks.

Review: Out-and-back rides are often greatly under appreciated. This is a classic example. Like back-coutry skiers who earn their turns by skinning up mountains, routes like this allow you to earn your whooping downhills by climbing them first.
