Description
The trail goes both ways. The easiest ride is towards Camp Wedekind. There are a couple of rough sections but this is mostly an easy grade. The upper end close to Camp Wedekind is on an old narrow gauge railroad bed. To the east the trail east starts out across the road/creek from Falls Creek CG. The trail should be signed. The trail does a loop. To the left it is steeper and gains elevation through a bunch of switchbacks. To the right it follows along the river for a couple miles before hooking to the left and climbing gently through a creek bottom. It curves more to the left until it tops the ridge above Falls Creek CG and drops down into the valley via the switchbacks you encounter immediately if you turned left instead of right. On this loop is another interconnecting loop to Margaret McKinney Campground.

Review: South area of Capitol Forest is non-motorized, North end allows ATVS. Trails are swooping, sweet singletrack, Climbs and downhills are moderate. Can be muddy after rains. Multi user traffic.

Similar Trail: Tahuya State Forest, Banner Forest. Fort Lewis system.

Review: great trail, never been on a loop shared with horses, makes for a muddy time in spots. Good scenery all the time and lots of options on where and how far you want to go.

Review: Went on the trails for the first time. And if you go at this time of the year after days of rain, then go on clear day, I recommend you to bring extra change of clothes, as you will come off the trail cover in mud LOL. It's fun, challenging, and great work out.

Review: Like the man said, get a map. For the description above is somewhat misleading becauses it confuses a portion of the Capitol Forest trail system with the system itself. Plus, the mileage is wrong. The trail described is actually a combination of two of four major trails to be found in the forest, and can be configured in many ways for any number of great loops. Specifically, the trails involved are Green Trail #6 and Mima-Porter #8, which are 'Green' trails (no motorized use), and joining them, end-to-end, since they start and end at the same points roughly, yields a giant loop of 54 miles or so (plan 7-10 hours for this puppy). The other two major trails are 'Red' trails (motorcycles but no horses), namely, North Rim #1 and Molly-Porter #3. Taken together, these form another epic loop of approximately 44 miles. This represents nearly 100 miles already -- not 75 -- and if you add the many secondary trails, which connect the major ones at various points, plus Mt. Molly Loop and Middle Waddell Loop (neither of which are true loops but which stand on their own merits), you've well exceeded the original estimate. The actual trail mileage in Capitol Forest is probably somewhere between 120 and 140 miles, all of it first-rate, classic, prime Pacific Northwest single-track. This used to be Klein's proving ground, after all, when their factory was located a short distance away in Chehalis. The forest is open year-round to mountain-bikes and is the only place in the Puget Sound area where you can actually find the mountain in mountain-biking while the high trails are still buried in snow.

Similar Trail: Don't forget the 'Red' trails.

Review: I ride the the Capitol (spelled with an o) Forest area regularly, have been on most of the entire system, and even I was confused by the opening trail description. I recommend you get a map from either the Washington State DNR or any Olympia area Bike shop. I have a section of the map online at (big scan 2mb) http://users.olynet.com/crabble/MTB/CapitalForestCore.GIF to get you started. This is a great system of trails that include something for everyone who is reasonably fit (rides aggressively 4+ hours a week). The north side is open to ATV's and is more suitable to shuttled downhills, and the south side to horses so is full of narrow rocky climbs.

Similar Trail: The trail alluded to in the opening review is great. From Falls Creek ride up to Wedekind, up to Capitol Peak then back down to Falls Creek for a wonderful introduction to the Forest. This will take about four hours for mortals.

Review: Another great ride is to start at the Mima Falls trailhead. From here you have the options of short or longer loops or a great out and back. But get the map. It is easy to get confused without getting the big picture.
