Description: Blue Heron is one of Greensboro's newest trails. The trail does not really have much elevation change. Even without the ups and downs, the trail has an excellent flow. The ride is beautiful as it follows along the shores of Lake Townsend. The trail is almost 4 miles each way and is a great beginners trail. This one goes for the newbie’s and a “bike for kids” day is well deserved. Get the kids out and ride with them!
Trail is an out and back route. Locals tend to start on the N. Church St. side to Yanceyville Rd. Then turn around. It starts off with a moderate technical drop of dirt track with a rock drop option on one side for the advanced riders. Trail has many woopty-doos that may require more speed than you think. Make sure to keep momentum so you can make it back up the gully. The gullies depth can range from 2ft to 6ft. A few berms have been incorporated to maintain a good flow. An 8ft skinny bridge is another option to cross a small creek or you could just cross the creek and get a little wet. The trail meanders through a forest of NC native trees and pine. You even get a view or pit stop at an old abandoned car near the trail. VERY fun trail for kids! Get them out for a ride. Show them how to ride and respect a good trail system for many generations to enjoy!
The Greensboro Fat Tire Society has been working hard constructing Blue Heron since spring 2009.
