Mountain Biking Bear Island Trail System

*   Add a review
#245 of 289 mountain bike trails in Florida
#11,552 in the world

This is a series of old mining and Oil/Gas roads. They aren't spectacular mountain biking trails, but they allow you to see parts of the Big Cypress Nation Preserve that you can't see from your car.
They are mostly flat with no real challenges. I did see a bear, a few osprey, alligators, a whole variety of wading birds, and a dusky pigmy rattlesnake.
It was interesting to see the terrain there in the northwest corner of Big Cypress National Preserve from my bike.

Getting there
From I-75, take the exit for Highway 29 and go north about 4 miles. The parking area is on the right. You have to go through a gate. Make sure you shut and latch the gate because this protects the Florida Panthers.
As you are traveling north you have the Florida Panther preserve on your left and the Big Cypress National Preserve on your right.
