The south part of the park (also referred to as "Deer Park") is a fun little warm-up prior to tackling the more technical and challenging northern section. It's also perfect for single speed riding, as the climbs are mostly short and fairly easy.
The best place to start your ride of the southern section is to park at the trailhead (shown on the map) at Deer Pond Road. There are maps available (and a port-a-potty), and trails are well blazed.
The white trail is probably the most fun, some great twisty single track sections, log jumps and a couple moderate climbs, some rocks but nothing too technical. The short red trail to Deer Pond is a blast, a smooth single track that takes you to a scenic view and connects to the easy blue trail, a mix of single-, double track and fire road. The orange trail is much more technical, with some narrow bridges and a rocky stream crossing followed by a single track section that will take you out to a road from which you can access the northern section of Allamuchy State Park.
All in all, the south section of the park is a lot of fun, and a nice change from the usual rocky, rutted trails in the New York/New Jersey area. You can cover all the trails in 2-3 hours of moderate riding, and the white trail is a great warmup or a spot to bring advanced beginner to intermediate riders.
Be careful in the autumn and winter, when wet leaves over roots and rocks make things very slippery (the curse of forested east coast riding).
